Back to the wall

See what I did there? Not intentionally, but I did notice before I hit publish that my post title could be read two ways.

Today was the day for more holes.  I started by cutting the little squares and trying them in various layouts.  I could, maybe, have just dropped them onto the top and then sewed them where they fell, but I went for just a bit more control.

I cut their middles out, but turning the edges to the back and tacking is a fiddly job, which I wasn't in the mood for today.  I know it's only quick and dirty at this stage, but I am up to my eyeballs in hand stitching everywhere else, so put it off and instead played around looking at different fabrics behind the holes, like this,

this,

and this.

I know which one I prefer at the moment.  What do you think?  I'm going to hunt around and see if I can find something much lighter and something much darker and try those too.

I like the one square that has a peak of the lighter bit of fabric behind it - so much nice contrast to the colors surrounding it. :)

I love that you cut into a pieced top. Thanks for sharing!

Tough choice, Kaja. I think my opinion will change when the facings are turned. This is certainly interesting to follow!

I am a big fan of making quilts in this organic way - no rules, no patterns. Just letting the fabric and the WALL guide you. Arranging and rearranging thus ensures that all quilts are original!!! I will be watching this WALL closely to see the next development.
Thank you for your sweet comment on my blog Sew Preeti Quilts.

Hard to choose which fabric works better. I love the yellow and brown squares. They have a look of lichens on stone.

Kaja I'll be no help because each appeals for different reasons. Love the Kaffe Lotus fabric, it's one of my favorites. The darker brown and yellow with white looks more like the bits of leaves and twigs that pileup between the stones. The last photo is my favorite color and contrast wise. One of my problems is that i interpret things too literally. You have a true artist's eye, so have confidence in your own choices!

I like the design in the fourth photo the best!

I think I like the second option the best; the brown? Can't wait to see what you choose. It's looking really good!
