Back in the city

It's taking me a while to get moving again after two weeks of absolutely no piecing.  The first time I returned to it was a write-off, just a lot of tea-drinking and no idea of where to go.  This time, I think, was a bit better, though I reckon I may be moving backward fast.

If you want to see where I left this piece, you can click here.  When I laid it out on the floor again it seemed top heavy, so I took the top chunk away and tried it at the bottom.  Like this:

That doesn't seem quite right either, so I stripped the original section back to this, adding a skinny column on the left.

Then one extra row across the bottom.

I think I am going to have a very thin red border right round this.  I laid out the red I have (of course not enough, so I will have to search out something similar).  This is only a 1.5" strip, so will not look as wide as in this picture once it's sewn.

As for that extra big chunk, I may add to it and make it wider, or more likely will chop it in two as it's not really working for me.

Linking up with Off the Wall Friday.

I always find it fascinating to watch someone's process on a creative quilt such as this. Validating even, when you say you took a few steps backward and changed the layout - as I myself often do. Good job so far, and I look forward to the final result!

Looking good! I like that red border you're adding around your center "slab". Is that piece a square?

I think your renovations have improved the neighborhood. It is fun to watch you work on this piece. Love the red strip.

I really like how improvisationally you are putting together this top. The touch of red for a thin border is really going to help it pop, too.

I like each improvement you've made. And since I love running out of fabric... do you really want red all the way around the border? Isn't there something else you can add to it? I'm thinking also of some of the art quilts I've seen that have a border/frame on two side only.

Oh so interesting to see how you're working through the details of this wonderful quilt.:)

I think you made the right choice - there's definitely more balance. I love the way you can find balance without symmetry, so exciting, as is seeing you develop your design :) I'm already thinking about how you'll quilt this one!

Whenever I am doing a lot tea-drinking I always end up with an idea of where to go... the bathroom. LOL Sorry Kaja, that thought popped into my mind when I read that.
Your fearless chopping and rearranging keeps me in awe - I am much too chicken. It would take more than tea-drinking to for me to be able to pick up the rotary cutter.

I'm enjoying surfing your blog, can you tell? ;D I have such admiration for the ability to do improv really well. And: Wow! This project is super striking. LOVE that red border and the central visual ideas going on. I'm just enchanted. :)
