The title of this post is ironic. My laptop died so I have wasted a week of good sewing time figuring out what to replace it with and ordering said replacement. Then the delivery company thought they had delivered it - well they had, just not to me. Their driver had given it to a random builder working on a house somewhere else in my village! So then he had to come back, retrieve it and redeliver, only this time to the right place. Now it's up and running, but the photo software I used to use (which was basic and idiot-proof) is not around anymore and I can't find an alternative that both sorts and stores and lets me do simple editing all in one go. Oh my, the range of complicated options out there is slightly terrifying! I have just had to find two tutorials, one to straighten my image and one to crop, which just seems ridiculous. If you have any recommendations, please add them in the comments.
In the meantime, I have got as far as this piece, which I am generally pretty happy with
except for the dimensions: it is about 60" long, but probably only half that across, so very long and skinny. I have played around with things I could try on the sides with limited success. There are photos but I lack the tenacity to turn them into useable images right now. Maybe I'll try again tomorrow.

Oh my goodness, I'm so glad the delivery person was able to find the delivery to correct their mistake. The quilt top has made beautiful progress. As for photo editing software, I don't know that I have a great suggestion for the storing end of the solution (I keep my photos organized on my hard drive independent of the software), so I hope you find something that will meet all of your needs.
Oh do I feel your pain with the change in computer (not to mention the mis-delivery issues) and the lack of easy-to-use photo software. Not sure if you are on a PC or a Mac. On my old PC, I kept my photos in folders by project on my hard drive (like Yvonne). With my Mac, I use Photos (their software). Have you tried adding more of your light fabrics on the sides (I love what you have so far)?
I had the same issue with photo editing software when I bought a new computer. I used to use Picasa, which was so simple. I finally found one called Faststone (hope I spelled that right) and it's simple enough. Only had to watch one or two YouTube videos and was able to start using. I also had downloaded Gimp, which is more like Photoshop (hence more complicated, imo). Had to create my watermark in that to add it to photos being edited in Faststone. But if you don't need to watermark, Faststone has all else needed. Hope that helps!
It is a pain to change when it come to technology. I am glad the delivery company was able to correct their mistake. I like your piece very much! To make it wider why not just somewhat replicate what you have so far? I am no help with the photo editing question. I do the best I can and that is what I post. My poor readers! LOL!!
Irfanview is highly recommended by genealogy people (my other interest). I used it early on, then lost it when I changed computers and continue to use Picasa. But I think Irfanview is fairly simple. So sorry you're having problems.
Tech and goofed deliveries can be disappointing, yes!
Your design is looking very good, excellent! And more to come.
