No sooner do I think I know my mind than things change. Those triangles, which didn't look at all right down at the bottom, were somehow the best fit when I came to working the next row across the top. Go figure.
The sharp-eyed amongst you will notice that although this is now, broadly speaking, a medallion quilt, I am not being entirely consistent about working in rounds. More a 'mostly medallion' quilt, I guess. I have been thinking about trying to articulate the 'rules' that I feel emerge as I piece. It's not entirely easy, since I seldom think them through, but looking at this I can see that, loosely, I am not putting two sets of wedges side-by-side, or two long runs of plain strip (except where there are coping strips). The black fabric is only being paired with orange, and most strips are cut so that they run vertically. There is probably at least one exception to each of these, but I did say they were loose rules.

I am so glad those triangles found a place in this top. I liked the bird fabric in them. I wasn't aware that you had any rules at all. Mostly it feels to me that you have an excellent sense of balancing elements and color and you know when things are working or not working. I really like this piece.
"Loose rules" are my favorite kind Hahaha;)))--Your piece is really looking good. I do like those triangles at the top instead of below with the "heavier looking wedges...nice work hugs, Julierose
"mostly a medallion" - those are my FAVORITE kind! This is shaping up beautifully - one of my favorites so far.
The triangles look perfectly at home at the top there!
It's fun to see how this quilt is progressing. I enjoyed reading your articulation of the rules as you see them. All I need to know, and do know, is that your quilts always come together cohesively through your unique process, and that's lovely!
I love those little triangles at the top. I love what I am seeing. Rules....I think they are there to be broken. I rather like your loose rules. =)
Alternating pieced units with long strips sets them both off well. Same with mixing the darkest and brightest fabrics. It’s amazing how this make all the individual fabrics-dark, bright, and in between - shine. Your rules make the triangles fit so well where they are now. What fun to see your progress. Thanks for sharing.
Very exciting design adventure going on here.
That quilt has a mind of its own!
I love the term 'Mostly Medallion', I think I would have to make a 'Mostly Asymmetrical' for the one I intended making - note the 'intended', mine may be a little late! So, the quilt has spoken and the pointed triangles are in, you're quite right, they do look good as just a part of one round.
