I'm not a pick fan of unpicking but sometimes there's really no other option. Well actually you can always get your rotary cutter and slice straight down the offending seam, but that's a bad habit I am trying to break.
However, going right back to the beginning seems to have worked. I have jettisoned a couple of fabrics and added in a couple of new ones, including a lovely red bird design. I have also decided to take the dark blue fabric and make it an anchor for everything else, to try and impose some much needed structure.
Here's my first thought, as it looked laid out on the floor.

I like the rhythm you've created with the colors and block sizes and their placement, Kaya. It will be interesting to watch the development of this quilt.
This looks so much better; it's worth the unpicking. Now the diagonals that you hinted at before shine through. There's enough value change to see into the quilt. Good solutions.
This definitely un-mushes (is that even a word?! LOL!!) this and the butterflies are now more visible. Yes, your next question on which way to go now is one that will be answered only with time. Right now it reminds me of a trip around the world with a hit of medallion.

Unpicking is a fact of life isn't it? That's what my home- ec teacher in high school would always tell us students.
I don't mind unpicking so much if I take breaks and maybe watch a good movie. A snack now and then helps too.

Looking so good now! Funny how it had to totally be taken back down to the basics. Some quilts are just onery that way.:)
