I have made better progress in the last couple of days and the addition of those extra prints is definitely helping to take this (and me) to a better place.
Once I get a fair number of bits I like to lay them out every time I am working. They are different each time for a while, but I know that eventually I will look at some particular combination, two blocks sitting next to each other and think, 'yes, you'll do' and those will become one bigger piece. It is also helping me to think about what I need to do next. I can't just go on making bits without any clear idea of whether I need them. Well, I could, but it would be a bit of a waste and just leave me searching around for an alternative to replace the fabrics I had started with.
Looking at this (and knowing that I have another of the big black crosses almost finished) I am thinking that I need some more of the medium-sized and smaller blocks and that at the moment there are not enough bits of the tan fabric. I will make extra black/tan/green crosses and also see how many squares I can cut out of my remaining magpie fabric. Once I've got these extras I can start looking at the bigger picture and thinking how the different colours are moving around the top.
There's a long way to go, but things are starting to click. I might even be starting to like those ice cream tones again.

Yes, as you progress I see how well the tan sets off the ice cream colors. The different cross scales become more evident and the whole thing starts to make sense. A picture coming into focus. Enjoy yourself and thanks for sharing.
I have come to once again see what you have been playing with lately. =) Fabulous progress and I must say a little more of the tan fabric will add that little bit of oomph to the other fabrics. Your playing always seems like such fun, Kaja.

I am just making "parts" on my first improve curves...
trying to get a handle on fabrics I chose and how they are going together...
I really am "out there"..have to get a feel of what I envison...
I am surprised at how they are looking in the curves...

This piece is growing each time I see your post. I do like the large dark crosses but can see what you mean when you think of perhaps a few more medium or small squares. I just adore those little birds!!

I'm beginning to see your progress and love the dark crosses most, but your idea to include the medium tones works really well and prevents the black from hijacking the magpies. It's becoming a Kaja quilt already!
Looking good! I like the depth the additional prints are giving it. Reminds me of Spumoni ice cream - yum!
Unusually pale fabrics for you at the start, sugary is a good word for them yes, really like the darker strips which lift and support the paler fabrics. Interesting to see how colours all play together
Tan—must be the waffle cone for the ice cream. :) No wonder I like that addition. Seriously, I do like what is happening here.
