Building bigger bricks

In the middle of the night, when anyone as tired as I was should definitely have been sleeping, I woke up to wonder to myself why I seem to be working with smaller and smaller pieces.  With the current wall project I just started by cutting a size I liked the look of, but of course once you start factoring in seam allowances things get small pretty quickly.

This morning I cut some more squares, only bigger this time.

This is what they look like mixed up with the original bits:

and with some turned on their ends.

This is clearly not going to be the quilt I started off thinking I would make, but that's nothing new; I just need to keep going and get to grips with what's going on here.

Whatever it is that is going on, I think it looks quite promising! I look forward to seeing what it turns into, as it looks like a great scrap quilt inspiration. Some of the pieces do look like they will be absolutely tiny, but who knows, it may be just what's needed.

I enjoy reading your process -- how you got to these multiple sized pieces. Will you use one background fabric? Curious to see how you continue with this.

I like this...sometimes we should be a little more free with how we sew and quilt. It might surprise you and become something beautiful.

Very pretty fun play - looks like that's what's going on there. :) Loving those fabrics together so much!

I really like how it is coming along even if it wasn't what you planned, I think that is what makes it all so fun and enjoyable!

This is a great use of scraps and will turn out to be such a cute quilt. Looking good!

Interesting. You're absolutely right about seam allowances. It's hard to remember how much they affect the layout.

Looking interesting! I love your colours here & am enjoying reading how you went about this, and glad I'm not the only one thinking in the middle of the night! I'd take a guess & wonder if these are the beginnings of scrappy vortex blocks?

I had no idea that the blocks you were working with were so small. Fun to see the size contrast!

If you keep adding size to the bricks, you'll have scrappy in a different way. Just think of the possibilities! It's already beginning to take on a personality. Love, love it! As for waking up with a quilt on my mind, well, why do you think I'm up at 7:00 on a Saturday morning? It's still better than waking to thoughts about school! I think we're all just a little crazy!
