Yup, I'm currently working in a space which just doesn't allow proper photos once you go beyond a certain size.
It did eventually occur to me that I could venture into the (unheated) conservatory; not something I am normally keen to do at this time of year. Actually, thanks to the ridiculously mild winter it was not too bad and I managed to get one photo of the bottom two thirds - though I had to hold the camera at arms length, above my head, and just hope for the best.
The tricky thing with putting this together has been that while the bigger curves came into being largely as a way of making the smaller units larger, and hence are entirely there for a practical purpose, I want some control over where they sit within the quilt as a whole, so that they look right to my eye. I've too-ed and fro-ed and have added one curve that isn't at all necessary (not visible in this picture) but am reasonably happy with the piece in the photo. I thought maybe the large curve on the right hand end needed to be moved, but am waiting to see that it looks like when the top row is ready before I do anything drastic.
With a fair wind this will be done by the end of today.

ReplyDeleteI like it a lot. I'm in a cramped space, too, and that's why I have not yet really done anything bigger than a crib quilt size. I have a couple of tops pieced that are larger, but they are just relegated to the UFO box for now. I wish you smooth sailing!

ReplyDeleteWow - this is coming together really well, I love it! And yes, it's always tricky getting enough space to stand back & see the whole effect. My design wall is quite small, so I regularly use the floor, and balance precariously up on a nearby table to get that one final pic!

ReplyDeleteHere's hoping that the winds were in your favor. I am excited to see this one in all its glory because, honestly, it's fabulous. I love the long curves. Actually I found myself looking for (and counting) different motifs. It just pulled me in and I needed to know how many of this, how many of that. I just knew those colors were perfect together...it's very a calming and restful combination.
ReplyDeleteNo OR about it...practical AND pretty. I don't have a design wall so most of my stuff just gets randomly sewn together. Sometimes I think I need one but then I think of grandma making quilts...no design wall. I loved her quilts and quilt stories.

I know what it's like trying to work in a cramped space too...grrr! It's coming along so well - and pretty quickly too, especially considering you don't like making the 9 patches :D
ReplyDeleteIt's so tricky to photograph large quilts. This is looking great Kaja! The curves make the nine patches look like they are traveling places. Very dynamic!
