Not the smoothest of starts

This is taking a while to get going.

Following on from last time, I cut the rest of my big print into triangles, but that didn't seem to amount to much, so I made some more using my black and green grunge fabrics, and now have nine pairs.

Now these weren't doing it for me at all when they were all laid out on the kitchen floor, but looking at them on the computer screen I am revising my opinion so they may survive as they are.

Clearly this doesn't amount to a whole quilt, and my first thought was some smaller flying geese (you can see one lurking below the two orange-y blocks).  My second thought was that I might go a wee bit mad if I went back to fiddly little triangles, albeit it rectangular rather than square.

Now I'm wondering about simple string blocks.  I made one, to see what I thought.  The strips were cut freehand, some with a rotary cutter, some with scissors, but it is irritatingly orderly.  Never mind.  I'm going to look at it for a while and then decided whether to make more.

After your last quilt, a lot of triangles (albeit in geese form) does seem like it might push you a bit far. Doing the strings on an angle like that adds movement nicely.

I love it, throw out the rules! lay out your fabric. love the big pieces. (a large string block or a humongous goose?) I love how it is looking so far <3

I never thought string blocks would look overly orderly but see what you mean. What about Chinese Coin/piano keys? And some of your fabulous stamping? Or applique borders? Or alternate these big triangles with quarter square circles the same size? You'll have something great.
Like you, I love triangles, but you need a break from them, too.

Themes, color and line, now to get them to play together.
The challenge is on.

Isn't it crazy that we can cut freestyle and still end up with orderly looking blocks! I am absolutely loving the look and feel of this. That thin little strip inside the triangles is such an interesting element! Can't wait to see what you come up with next. As always, I am so amazed at where you start and the wonderful journey along the way.

Oh I love these flying geese with the centre strip, very, very effective. I find the string blocks a little stiff looking alongside the flying geese and Ann has come up with the possibility of Chinese Coins, these could look good, different sizes.

Something curvy?

irritatingly orderly, smirk! Well the lines repeat the diagonal lines in triangles. I know how you are, make more. And make them different sizes. And mess them up! Low contrast and some high contrast. I know you will make it work, you always turn the corner somehow and make the most amazing tops! Then you hand quilt them! Awesome!

How about turning your geese in different directions - or making large pinwheels with them?

In reading the comments there are lots of great ideas. Lots of playing around until something comes together happens seems to be what you might have to do.

I have found the more I make string pieces the straighter my cutting lines are when I don't want them straight! It now takes some concentration to make my lines crooked! LOL!!

Let your string blocks go liberated - multi-width strings, quirky angles, offset trimming so they don't line up like a drill team ... love strings and all their possibilities.

"Irritatingly ordinary"! I agree. lol You certainly didn't free-hand with abandon.

I am inclined to go crazy and cut those pesky triangles up even more. LOL

Slash the strings.... truncate the triangles.... gather the geese... love the extra color the string block adds, but they do seem quite orderly. :)

I had to laugh at your comment of no more small triangles for a bit. It's nice to mix it up while quilting, isn't it? I like your strip idea, and the variety of fabrics.

no more triangles, could be sure I see triangles in there ....
