How big is big enough?

I got another chunk added onto the length of this, and then thought it was time to stick it on a bed to gauge its size.

As you can see the length is not far off.  I already knew I needed to go wider, and this is a big bed (6' across) so I don't need as much as you might think from the photo.  There's still quite a bit of work to do, but I feel like I've got the bit between my teeth now, so as long as I don't have too many unforeseen interruptions, I might meet my self-imposed deadline (or at least come close).

Every time I read your quilt name, I actually hear the shipping forecast in my head. To my chagrin that used to pass for entertainment when I was young.

This is a really lovely quilt--are you going to continue with hst's or add border pieces?

That's great that you did a fit check and found you are nearing the size you want!!

This looks wonderful. How much more do you need to add to make it fit a "normal-sized" bed? Will repeating the last three rows of the bottom on each side be enough? That should go relatively quickly.

This picture puts into perspective how much work you have invested in this quilt. Just a little more to go.

That's a good idea to see how far you've come and get an idea of how much you want to add by just laying the quilt on a bed! Simple yet profound, have a good day Kaja.

Like I said before, I absolutely LOVE this quilt top.

This is a wonderful quilt. I love that you’ve printed the shipping forecast on it. And find this method of measuring quilts very useful. I see the little elephant quilt behind it. Two great examples of your originality.

Oh this isn't too far off being finished! I love all those different sized HSTs and the The Shipping Forecast as a name for the quilt couldn't be bettered.

Your smart for trying that out on the bed for size. I can't tell you how many quilts I have made that I failed to do this and the quilts came out either a bit small or way too big! LOL!! I guess I get in too big of a hurry to take the time to measure.

Beautiful! so close to the beginning of hand quilting?

I do believe that having it lying this way makes the triangles feel more like waves. Maybe it's being able to see all the quilt at once, though we've seen pictures of it on the floor.
Not that I'd ever tell you what to do, but may I suggest that you audition a strip of HSTs on the left side to "nudge" the lighthouses more toward the center. Not all the way center, certainly, but so that the topmost yellow one can get a little more attention. It's one of those modern quilt conundrums...how much is too much? Maybe "The Shipping Forecast" should predict the outcome. :)

That quilt is much bigger than I thought it was while I've been watching it come together. You're so close!
